Why we walk

This year, there is an urgent need to provide support to women and children in our community. Times of crisis and financial hardship exacerbate domestic violence and this is exactly what has happened throughout the pandemic.

Since March 2020, YWCA Cambridge has seen a dramatic increase in the need to provide direct support to women and youth who are struggling at this time. We meet women are experiencing social isolation, increased stress of job loss or insecurity, mental health concerns, access to reliable internet and technology, challenges to care giving and child care constraints, limited access to food and household essentials and increasingly, women and youth who are experiencing violence in their homes.

Similarly, the youth who take part in our programming increasingly need support as they experience many of the same stressors, all while being heavily relied upon to care for siblings. They are often struggling with their own mental health and navigating living in unsupportive and unsafe homes, which are often not accepting of who they are.

These problems existed for the women, families and youth before this year but COVID-19 has compounded them to levels that we have never seen before. Our community is struggling but you can help.

Walk Your Way

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an annual fundraising event where people of all ages, genders and abilities raise awareness about gender-based violence while raising much needed funds to support our prevention work. We walk in solidarity with survivors of violence because each year in Canada, over 75,000 women and their children flee their homes to escape violence and 2021 has undoubtedly seen that number raise.

This year, we have partnered with YWKW to increase awareness of the need to support families throughout the Region. But, as in previous years, all funds donated to YWCA Cambridge’s Walk will be used to empower and uplift our community. Your dollars stay local and change lives right here at home.

This Year Is different

We may not be able to come together and walk like we normally do but we can still make a difference, together. This year we ask that you register and walk your way, whatever that looks like to you.

Whether it be hiking some of our beautiful local trails, walking the dog around the block, sporting the red heels on your coffee run or challenging your colleagues and neighbours to do the same, we ask you to register, fundraise and walk in solidarity with survivors of domestic violence.

Please join us in walking in the name of the women in your life and the hundreds of women and girls who access prevention programming and services through YWCA Cambridge.

Together, We Will Make a difference

Funds from Walk a Mile in Her Shoes directly support YWCA Cambridge’s prevention and advocacy work with the goal to end gender-based violence and reach gender equality. YWCA Cambridge relies on funds raised by Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to provide free programming for women and children who are facing increased marginalization, isolation and are currently at an increased risk of violence in the home as a direct result of COVID-19.

Funds raised by walkers and community partners allow us to provide a safe(r) space for participants to access to staff and peer supports, community resources and programs designed to uplift and empower. Funds raised help to establish trusting relationships and provide support and guidance so that participants don’t feel alone.

Walk with us

Without the support of our incredible community champions, our work would not be possible. Without core funding for our violence prevention work, we rely on the support of donors and funders to help those most at risk of gender-based violence and marginalization. So thank you for walking alongside us all these years.

Show Your Support

The best way to help us create equity and end gender-based violence in our community is to support our work through either walking alongside us or donating to someone you know that is fundraising.

All funds raised support the programs of YWCA Cambridge, making your impact local. Your support will be used to run programs designed to instill confidence & self-esteem, empower participants to find their voice and demand equality and a life free from violence and full of opportunity.

Partnership Opportunities

We are grateful to the generosity of our corporate sponsors and community partners. Together we create a memorable community-focussed event that brings together friends, neighbours and family to raise awareness about the impact of gendered violence in Cambridge. Our partners make this event possible, through financial and in-kind support, with all funds raised supporting the vital programs of the YWCA Cambridge.

If your team would like to work with us to raise your profile in the community, create a unique employee team building event or chat about creating a corporate partnership that meets your marketing objectives, please contact Caroline Barker, Director of Philanthropy, at 519.222.6405 or via email at c.barker@ywcacambridge.ca
