SHYFT aT HOME WORKSHOPS

DIY Scrapbooking Journals

Open to cis and trans girls, non-binary and two-Spirit Individuals Ages 8-12.
Monday, January 11

By now, we’ve probably already been seeing a lot of talk about the year 2020 and the pressure to share our feelings about the past year.

In this at-home workshop, we will be creating our own journals that can be used as an outlet for the things we might not feel like sharing openly. We will chat about the messaging that is often presented in a new year as well as some of the current language used about saying goodbye to 2020. Do we feel pressured to feel the same way about last year as the trendy narrative? What other narratives do we often hear when a new year comes, and how do those make us feel?

Included in at-home kit:
Notebooks
Scrapbooking paper
Glue
Scissors
Colouring/writing materials.
Instructions and discussion guide will be provided and an optional Zoom link for those who’d like to connect with the facilitators about the content.

To register for a kit, contact thew@ywcacambridge.ca or fill out the form below. Kit deliveries and Zoom chats take place on the Monday date listed only.

At home baking Challenge

Open to cis and trans girls, non-binary and two-Spirit Individuals Ages 8-12.
Monday, January 18

We’ve all heard of Nailed It, the baking challenge TV Show. Well, we decided to create a SHYFT At Home kit inspired by this wild and wacky Netflix fave (since we’re still waiting for a new season!).

Often in January, we hear a lot of talk about resolutions to eat ‘healthier’; well, we like resolutions about enjoying more cake. Let’s talk about how food resolutions make us feel, and have fun getting creative with cake while doing it.

Included in at-home kit:
Cake mix
Jar of icing
Various decorating materials
Instructions and discussion guide and optional Zoom link to decorate together.

To register for a kit, contact thew@ywcacambridge.ca or fill out the form below. Kit deliveries and Zoom chats take place on the Monday date listed only.

DIY Lavender Sleep Sachets

Open to cis and trans girls, non-binary and two-spirit individuals ages 8-12.
Monday, January 25

During the current worldwide pandemic, we might be seeing a lot of conflicting information when it comes to health related topics. We may be receiving medical information from well researched and trusted organizations, but we may also be coming across phrases such as “natural remedies” or “natural health” countering medical news and information.

So, we thought this would be a good time to discuss what we do know about natural health and use our critical thinking skills to figure out how we separate fact from opinion. Who can we trust with information on natural health, and who might be profiting or benefitting from us believing what we’re told and therefore buying what we’re being sold? What is the difference between natural healing from the cultural perspective vs what we see in ads marketed to us?

In this workshop, we will be making lavender sleep sachets; lavender is said to help people sleep. But does that mean it’s true? And if it is true for some, does that mean it’s true for everyone? Is there harm in believing this for ourselves individually, or is it only a problem when remedies such as this are sold as fact to the general public?

Included in at-home kit:
Dried lavender
One sachet
Ribbon
Instructions and discussion guide and an optional zoom link. To register for a kit, contact thew@ywcacambridge.ca or fill out the form below. Kit deliveries and Zoom chats take place on the Monday date listed only.

How do we love our bodies during a pandemic? COVID-19, food, and body image

Open to all.  Thursday, February 4, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed our lives, forcing many of us to make significant changes to our everyday schedules and how we connect with others. Alongside these changes, there has been an increase in pressures to “get fit at home” and “keep the pandemic weight off”, which can worsen body image and feelings of guilt around food and exercise in these already stressful times. In this 1-hour webinar, you will learn how to frame discussions around weight during the pandemic, what to do around changing weight and movement/food habits, and how to challenge weight-focused discussions from family and friends during this time.

Dr. Amanda Raffoul (she/her) is a postdoctoral fellow at STRIPED, the Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders, based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Boston Children’s Hospital. She has expertise in dieting, disordered weight control behaviours, weight stigma, and policy approaches to the prevention of eating disorders. Amanda received her PhD in Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo and has volunteered in youth programming with The W in Cambridge since 2015.

SHYFT AT Home
Self Care Sessions

SHYFT At Home is growing! Our January workshops had filled so quickly, that we thought it was time to move up to a closed group. A closed group means you sign up once, and attend all 4 weeks with the same people. This allows us to connect with each other consistently, and get to know one another a little bit better.
We may not have as many opportunities in our lives these days to make friends, try new things, and explore what feels helpful for us when we need a little extra care. Enter: the SHYFT At Home Self-Care Sessions. We will meet on Zoom each Monday in the month of February to try a new self-care activity together. Those registered will receive a package of supplies for all 4 activities, as well as instructions and discussion guides in case a meeting is missed. (Note: we will switch to a Tuesday meeting for the week of Family Day). We won’t reveal each week’s activity yet, but one week may involve slime. Just sayin’. Open to Cis and Trans Girls, Non-Binary and Two-Spirit Individuals ages 8-12.

Email thew@ywcacambridge.ca to inquire or register through the form below. You must be in touch with W staff to arrange logistics of obtaining the activity kit for all 4 weeks
