Our Centres
Our Child Care Centres offer a variety of programs, from preschool and toddler groups to full and part-time day care, as well as before and after school care. We can accomodate children ranging in age from 18 months to 12 years. Each centre provides its own mix of options, and all programs are fully licensed by the Ministry of Community and Social Services. Most programs are integrated for children with special needs, using support from community agencies. We would be happy to help you select the best care for your child. Please give us a call at 650-0800.
Our Philosophy
Our goal is to foster a strong, positive self-image within your child. Each child develops skills in choice-making, problem solving and socialization. We strive to enhance both natural curiousity and creativity, and are dedicated to the concept of learning through play.
While your child enjoys his or her time at the centre, our focus will be on helping all the children reach their full potential and on providing a sound base for future learning.
Our Approach
The YWCA of Cambridge child care services have embraced the Reggio Emilia early childhood education philosophy. Reggio Emilia is a small town in Italy that has fostered and developed a unique approach to child care. It is an approach that is centred around light, order and beauty environmentally, and focuses on the use of language and a multitude of artistic media to discover and express ideas. The role of the teacher is to support and nurture children's rich relationships with the world around them as well as to facilitate exploration and experiences through joint discovery and problem solving.
One of the key elements of the Reggio Emilia approach is emergent curriculum. Emergent curriculum allows teachers to respond to children's ideas as curriculum unfolds. The time frame is open, allowing projects to follow the children's interests. Ideas develop from one another. For example, a discussion on planets led to an interest in the Earth, which led to projects on the world, which led to an exploration of food, customs, dress, and flags, which led to an interest in the Olympics.
We continue to explore and learn about the Reggio approach. It is an exciting journey that allows children to grow and flourish in a positive environment.
